The evergreen acerola shrub comes from central america and brazil and can reach a height of up to 3 meters. The shrubs are grown in small plantations and the fruits are harvested 3-4 times a year.
The fruit:
The fruits are 1-3 CM in size, yellow-orange to red, have a very thin skin and are juicy sweet-sour to very sour. They look similar to cherries, although they are not related. With around 1700 mg to max. 3000 mg vitamin c per 100 g fruit flesh, they have AT least 30 times as much vitamin c as the lemon.
In contrast to man-made vitamin c, the special feature of the vitamin c gained from the acerola fruit lies in the combination with the other ingredients of the fruit. In addition to vitamin c, the acerola also contains provitamin a, vitamin b 1, vitamin b 2, niacin, iron, phosphorous and calcium.
Based on our knowledge today, this unique natural composition reinforces the antioxidative cell protection effect of the vitamin C. IT is estimated that this natural vitamin c has twice the effect of the synthetically produced ascorbic acid. Acerola is suitable for people who are allergic to citrus fruits.
